(Practice Experience (2) - Application of Mindfulness)

source : Hunter x Hunter

==============================

Before diving into the article, please remember:

The power of the mind is real!

The power of the mind is real!

The power of the mind is real!

Ultimately, all life begins with a single thought.

The purpose of this piece is to empower everyone to protect themselves, like the characters in the image, breaking free from the chains of malice.

So, how can we apply this?

Let’s start by talking about our reactions to the outside world.

When our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind encounter external stimuli, various thoughts naturally arise within. This is normal.

For example:

  • Seeing an attractive person brings joy and affection.
  • Seeing a villainous or unattractive person brings disgust or dislike.
  • Hearing pleasant music feels uplifting.
  • Hearing construction noise feels irritating.

Most people cannot control these thoughts as they arise. However, through training, we can reduce the impact of these thoughts to a minimum and even reverse them.

While we won't go into reversing mechanisms here, let’s focus on self-protection.

In previous articles, I briefly mentioned good and bad thoughts in terms of wholesome and unwholesome minds. Near-death thoughts, or the mental state at the time of death, can influence our next rebirth. With appropriate training, we can lower the chances of being reborn in undesirable realms.

Factors influencing rebirth priority are:

  1. Grave karma – significant deeds with lasting consequences.
  2. Near-death karma – the mental state at the time of death.
  3. Habitual karma – our consistent tendencies and actions.
  4. Accumulated karma – all actions we have performed.

Grave karma includes actions like killing one’s parents, causing division within the monastic community, wounding a Buddha, or achieving deep meditative states. Meditation may lead to rebirth in higher realms, while others may lead to rebirth in unfortunate states.

For those who choose to willingly descend into hell to help sentient beings, I respect your choice.

If no grave karma is present, rebirth is determined by the next strongest factor among near-death karma, habitual karma, or accumulated karma. Generally, the earlier a factor emerges, the more likely it is to influence rebirth. But sometimes habitual force or an impactful past action can determine rebirth first.

This is about rebirth, but what about daily life?

Sometimes, we encounter malicious content or hostile comments online, which may cause harm if we don’t protect ourselves. Similarly, being in negative environments like hospitals, battlefields, cemeteries, or other places with heavy energies can lead to self-harm or harm to others if we’re not adequately shielded.

So, how do we protect ourselves?

Here are several methods:

  1. Don’t forget to breathe.
  2. Practice mindfulness (Zhan).
  3. Establish boundaries.
  4. Invoke protective forces.
  5. Chant mantras.
  6. Recite “Amitabha Buddha.”
  7. …and other techniques.

In the Hunter x Hunter manga, Wing taught Gon and Killua to sense the flow of qi within their bodies, visualizing it flowing calmly and wrapping around them—this practice is akin to mindful awareness.

Of course, mastering this won’t grant “nen” abilities; that’s just manga!

But when confronted with malice or spontaneous hostility, try focusing on your breath or practicing mindfulness by bringing attention to the body.

You may notice that in that instant, both external and internal negativity weaken or even vanish.

Why practice regularly?

This relates to rebirth. If, by unfortunate chance, an accident occurs while you’re engulfed in anger, it could lead to rebirth in a negative realm. If nothing unfortunate happens, at least you’ll gain a moment of happiness instead of one filled with anger.

Moments filled with anger, resentment, or jealousy harm us first before they affect others.

From a religious perspective, negative emotions hurt us first. From a scientific viewpoint, numerous studies have shown that negative emotions affect cardiovascular health and increase the risk of various physical and mental illnesses. So, religious or not, these methods benefit us.

If possible, avoid toxic environments altogether. But if avoidance isn’t an option, remember these protective techniques.

May everyone be happy and free from suffering.
