(Practice Experience (9) – External Force)

Let’s Talk Physics Again… (Just Kidding)

This time, we’re talking about internal force and external force.

When it comes to internal force, what comes to mind might be things like "qi gathering in the dantian," the Absorbing Star Technique, Tai Chi, Muscle-Tendon Transformation Sutra, Nine Yin Manual, Nine Yang Manual...

Okay, the author is being unserious again.

Please disregard everything above.

Let’s get back to external force.

In the Kṣitigarbha Sūtra (Dizang Jing), it is said:

"Out of seven parts of merit, the deceased receives only one."

This originally refers to transferring merit to the deceased: when one performs wholesome deeds for someone who has passed away, only 1/7 of that benefit goes to the deceased; the remaining 6/7 benefits the living person who performs the action.

But this isn’t just about pattidāna (transference of merit) or posthumous ceremonies.

This principle applies in everyday life as well.

Think of the martial arts idea: The Seven Harm Fist harms the enemy seven, but harms oneself three.

Or in modern terms: kamma (karma) is a boomerang.

According to Kṣitigarbha Bodhisatta’s words, hurting others results in 86% harm to oneself, and only 14% harm to others.

The same ratio applies when helping others.

Helping others: 14%
Helping oneself: 86%

So—does other-power (paranissaya) work?

Looking at the ratio, wise readers will immediately understand.

Self-power (attānā) is still the most important.

But does that mean other-power is unimportant?

No.

Other-power can serve as leverage.

(Actually, self-power can also act as leverage—but we’ll leave that for another time.)

Readers familiar with Buddhist stories will know this well:

When the conditions are right...

A small stone,
a full moon,
a puddle of water,
a gentle breeze,
or a single sound

Any of these seemingly insignificant external forces
can become the tipping point that leads to awakening.

But before the result,
if there’s been no diligent bhāvanā (cultivation),
then no matter how fertile the soil,
there will be no harvest.

May everyone be happy and free from suffering.
